ABOUT LANGARA COLLEGE CONTINUING STUDIES

Langara Continuing Studies, a division of Langara College, is dedicated to lifelong learning and public service through education. Integral to being a financially self-supporting component of the public post-secondary institution, Langara Continuing Studies advances continuing education activities that are community-driven and student-focused. Our employees are experienced professionals who strive to be responsive and accountable to those who are served.

Endeavouring to be resources and contributors to community life, Langara CS personnel participate in and support significant public issues and concerns. Leading practitioners, expert in their chosen field, are drawn from the community at large to advise and to teach. Collaborative programs with community organizations further enrich the learning environment of the College.

Langara CS reflects the College mission through a variety of programs, courses and activities that are designed to improve the intellectual, cultural, social, physical and economic well being of individuals and the community.

The College goals guide the work of Langara CS to:

REGISTER EARLY!

Some classes fill quickly. Registration is guaranteed with receipt of payment. Registration is for the term May to August 2006.

  • PHONE IN ... 604-323-5322. Register by VISA or MasterCard, receipts will be mailed to your home.

  • DROP IN ... Register in person at the Continuing Studies office at Langara College. Pay by cheque, cash, debit or credit card.

  • MAIL IN ... Fill in a registration form (PDF Registration form) and send with a cheque or credit card information. Make cheques payable to Langara College. Sorry, we do not accept post-dated cheques.

The Continuing Studies office is closed and classes postponed during the following holidays:

  • Victoria Day Weekend: May 20 - 22
  • Canada Day Weekend: July 1 - 3
  • BC Day Weekend: August 5 - 7
  • Labour Day Weekend: September 2 - 4


COURSE CANCELLATIONS

A minimum enrollment is required to recover course costs. If that minimum is not reached, Continuing Studies reserves the right to cancel classes. Every attempt will be made to notify you in advance. A full refund will be processed unless we are notified of your wish to transfer to another class.


INCOME TAX RECEIPTS

Tuition fees for eligible courses exceeding $100 within a calendar year are income tax-deductible. Tax Receipts for 2005 and subsequent years will be available only on the Web. To access your receipt, you will need to login with your student number and password on the Langara College homepage. If you do not know your student number and/or password, please contact Continuing Studies at 604-323-5322.


GOODS AND SERVICES TAX (GST)

Courses that are designed to be taken primarily for recreational or general interest purposes are taxable. Any GST payable has been calculated and included in those courses affected.


WAIT LISTS FOR COURSES

Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, upon full receipt of tuition fees at the time of registration. If a course is full, you will be placed on a wait list. In some cases, another section of the course may be added. If a course seat becomes available, the person whose name is first on the wait list will be contacted.


WITHDRAWALS AND REFUNDS

  1. Refund requests must be submitted within 48 hours of the start of thecourse or event. Late requests will be subject to a pro-rated charge in addition to an administration fee.
  2. For courses or events with two sessions or less, refund requests must be submitted one full wee kday before the course start date.
  3. All refunds are subject to an administration fee of 20% of the course/event fee (minimum $15 to a maximum of $35 per course).
  4. No refunds will be issued for withdrawals except under extraordinary circumstances. In such instances, refunds will be pro‑rated from the date of application.

100% Refund Credit Alternative:
We would be pleased to hold a 100% credit of the registration fee toward taking another Langara Continuing Studies course. This credit is valid for 12 months.

Refund Payments: Fee payments made by credit card are refunded by means of a credit to your account. All other refunds are made by cheque. Please allow three weeks for processing.

Please Note: Certain programs and courses have refund policies different from above. Please refer to those guidelines as described.


CEUs/ILUs

Langara College Continuing Studies is adopting the ILU; a new outcomes based measure for recognizing lifelong learning. It will be phased in program by program. The class-hours based measure, the Continuing Education Unit (CEU), will continue to be used for the present where 1 CEU is awarded for every 10 instructional hours.

The ILU is awarded for successfully passing an outcome based evaluation with a pass rate of 80% with 1 ILU awarded for 50 content items covered. As examples, typically 3 ILUs may be awarded for a term long course while .1 ILU could be applied to a one-hour conference session that includes a test of the learning acquired.

The Learning Unit ( LERN), or International Learning Unit- ILU ( LERN) is sponsored by the Learning Resources Network, the largest international non-profit lifelong learning organization in the world.


STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

Students in need of disability services or accommodations may be eligible for assistance. Contact the Disability Services Coordinator at 604-323-5635 for and intake interview several weeks prior to the start of your course. You will be required to provide current documentation of your disability.

Langara College is committed to the principle that all members of the college community have the right to work and study in an environment free from harassment. The College does not condone and will not tolerate harassing behavior, which may undermine the dignity, self-esteem and productivity of student(s) and/or employee(s).

The College considers any form of harassment of an individual involved in College activities to be a serious violation of that individual's fundamental rights. Such conduct may be subject to a range of resolutions including mediated settlement or, in certain circumstances, disciplinary measures up to and including dismissal or expulsion.

EMERGENCY CLOSURE

If you are wondering if your class might be cancelled due to weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances, please call the College Switchboard at 604-323-5511 or listen to your local radio station.

SAFEWALK

In the evenings from Monday to Friday, campus security escorts groups to the parking lot. Groups leave from the security office, located beside the main cafeteria in “A” building, every half-hour from 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm. Another group leaves at midnight. If you need a security guard to walk you to your car at a different time, please call 604-253-7596 and ask for pager 2212. A security guard will meet you at the security office and escort you to the parking lot.
