Since 1996, the CKNW Orphans' Fund has given $222,000 to support the endowed Erm Fiorillo-Hal Davis CKNW Orphans' Fund Bursary, which provides assistance to single parent students. With matching funding from the provincial government and the College, this fund has grown to more than $445,000.

The CKNW Orphans' Fund recently donated $4,999 to the College's Child Development Centre, which provides on-campus day care for students, staff and the community. This gift helped buy learning tools for children with special needs, such as autism, delays in language and speech, and social and motor development.

Chen gift gives twice

Henry Chen, philanthropist and board member of the Dr. Sun Yat- Sen Gardens in Vancouver, has generously donated over $100,000 worth of photographic equipment to the Professional Photo- Imaging Program over the past three years. In addition to the significant difference this gift made to students, it also qualified for matching capital funds, allowing the program to purchase new technology, essential in keeping current with industry needs.

Gifts made to the Langara College Foundation allow the College to better serve students through bursaries and scholarships, improved facilities, and enhanced programs.

For more than 20 years, Langara College instructors have volunteered their time to give free community lectures. Subjects range from such topics as medieval manuscripts to democratic reform to gender issues in speculative fiction. The popular series (held during the fall and spring semesters), takes place at the main Vancouver Public Library. The series is made possible through support from Langara College and generous donations from the series' audience members.
